The True Path of Spiritual Maturity: Moving Beyond Childish Spirituality
In today’s world of spirituality, a popular belief suggests that personal growth means returning to the “natural spontaneity” and “joyful vitality” of a child. However, this view can be misleading. Seeking to regain a childlike state, while appealing on the surface, can prevent us from truly evolving as individuals.
A child, after all, is the least developed version of a human being. Children may embody freshness and openness, but they lack self-awareness, discernment, and emotional resilience. They are ruled by impulses and may suffer intensely over small, temporary matters. This rawness of emotion and immaturity in perception is natural in childhood, but it’s not a fitting model for mature, spiritual growth.
The Pitfalls of "Childish Spirituality"
Unfortunately, much of today’s spiritual world encourages practices that lean toward immature interpretations of spirituality. Here are some common traps:
Misguided Practices: Certain so-called “tantric practices” are distorted into little more than self-indulgent activities, ignoring the deeper significance of Tantra as a disciplined, transformative path.
Egocentric Psychedelic Journeys: While psychedelics can open new perspectives, many use them without guidance, pursuing personal highs rather than true self-discovery.
Superficial "Natural Living": Attempting to apply philosophies or naturalistic dogmas without real understanding often results in forced and unnatural behavior, which is the opposite of the spiritual ease we aim for.
These approaches create a kind of childish spirituality—chasing after spiritual highs or powers without understanding who it is within us that desires them in the first place. We risk falling into endless cycles of wanting and grasping, making spiritual growth superficial and stagnant.
Moving Toward Maturity in Spiritual Practice
When we begin a spiritual journey, we may be driven by lofty ideals like achieving Nirvana or developing special abilities. Yet, with time and serious self-exploration, our true aim becomes much simpler: we seek to remove the inner conflict, dissolve desires rooted in the ego, and allow ourselves to exist harmoniously within the flow of life.
A mature spiritual practice isn’t about chasing spiritual achievements but about emptying ourselves—letting go of mental constructs, desires, and superficial identity. We seek a state where only the simple “sense of being” remains, an experience of reality that is new and fresh in each moment.
At the same time, spiritual maturity involves cultivating discernment, the ability to objectively evaluate and understand our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Discernment is what separates a mature adult from a child. While a child may embody raw, unfiltered existence, a spiritually evolved adult embodies awareness—a deep, clear understanding that aligns their actions with inner truth rather than impulse.
Embracing the Natural State
True spiritual growth means arriving at a state where there are no troubling questions, no overwhelming theories, and no striving for “levels of enlightenment.” In the end, we become simple and grounded, embodying an ordinary, quiet presence that others feel at ease around. This natural, unforced state is the hallmark of genuine spiritual maturity.
The Paradox of Spirituality: Trying to “be natural” is, in fact, unnatural. By forcing ourselves to adopt behaviors or beliefs that we think are “spiritual” or “natural,” we are acting out of alignment with our true selves. Instead, when we let go of these pretensions and fully accept ourselves, we naturally come into harmony with life.
Conclusion
The path of mature spirituality requires honesty, patience, and the courage to look deeply within. By moving beyond the limitations of “childish spirituality,” we can cultivate a state of effortless naturalness, where the peace we embody flows naturally to those around us. It is in this state that we find true freedom and maturity—qualities that resonate deeply and provide a genuine path toward self-understanding and connection with the world.
