The Misleading TRAP of Following a GURU!
Updated: Nov 7, 2024
The Danger of Blindly Following Spiritual Stories
On the spiritual path, it is easy to get caught up in the stories told by others. We are often drawn to these "spiritual trips" where someone else—be it a guru, teacher, or spiritual leader—promises to provide us with the answers. The tendency to follow these stories without critically examining them for ourselves is one of the greatest risks on the spiritual journey.
The Trap of Passivity
When we rely too much on others to guide our spiritual understanding, we place ourselves in a passive position. We expect a guru or teacher to tell us exactly how to live, what to eat, what is right or wrong, and even how to behave. We become mere consumers of someone else’s wisdom instead of seekers of truth in our own lives. This approach not only limits our growth but also makes us vulnerable to manipulation.
The danger here is that it encourages us to avoid responsibility for our own spiritual journey. By relying on external sources of truth, we lose our capacity to see things for ourselves. We end up accepting ideas and teachings that have not been verified by our own experience. This can lead to blind obedience, making us susceptible to dogma and ideology, whether it’s spiritual or otherwise.
The Illusion of Certainty
Across all religions and spiritual traditions—whether it's Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, or Hinduism—people often follow teachings and philosophies that have been handed down through generations. While these teachings can offer wisdom, many practitioners simply accept them without ever questioning or experiencing them firsthand. This reliance on secondhand information creates an illusion of certainty, where we believe that our adopted truths are the ultimate truth.
The problem becomes clear when we realize that we are not living based on our own discoveries. Instead, we are merely parroting the ideas of others. Worse, we become so attached to these borrowed truths that we are willing to defend them fiercely, often to the point of conflict. We even go as far as fighting to convince others that we are right, while in reality, we are just adhering to a set of beliefs that we have not fully explored or validated for ourselves.
The Pitfall of Dogma
This pattern of blindly following others can lead to a rigid mindset. When we stop questioning and seeking, we become trapped in dogma. The very essence of spirituality is to find truth, not to inherit it from others. Spirituality should be about inner exploration and discovery, not passive reception of ideas.
If we don’t engage in the process of inner inquiry, we risk becoming spiritually immature—childish in our approach to life and easily manipulated by those who claim to know better. This makes us vulnerable to being misled by false teachers or ideologies. Without a critical, direct experience of truth, we remain lost in someone else's version of reality.
True Spiritual Growth Requires Personal Discovery
The essence of any spiritual practice, including Nei Qi Gong, is that it must be tested and verified through personal experience. We must step out of the passive role of a follower and embrace the active role of a seeker. We need to cultivate the ability to discern, to question, and to experience life and truth firsthand. This is the only way to free ourselves from the cycle of blind belief and to truly understand who we are.
True spiritual growth comes from personal experience, not from the doctrines handed down by others. When we can see for ourselves, when we test ideas and practices with our own being, we begin to discover a deeper, more authentic truth.
